Brookside Blast 10/14/22

We had an awesome turnout at all three of our open houses!

Thanks to families for their enthusiasm and sense of humor at our "selfie station" at each of the three open houses! Feel free to review a pdf of the slideshow from the brief Principals' presentation at the end of the events.

Again, if you are interested in volunteering, please begin here at the HUUSD website.

In other news, students in two PK and two of our Kindergarten classes enjoyed a visit to the Waterbury Fire Station this week, and we had a fabulous first All School Morning Meeting on Wednesday. During the ASMM, we celebrated October birthdays, learned about caring for the chickens from Mr. Thurston's class and learned and practiced our "closing song." Third and Fourth grade got moving at Little River State Park for their iMove field trip on Wednesday.

Please come follow us on instagram! We are @BrooksidePrimarySchool and we welcome your follows!

Have a fantastic weekend and we'll see you back on Monday!

Best,

Sarah & Chris

Music Notes

BPS Chorus: BPS Chorus will start on October 27th. Chorus is a singing group that rehearses once a week before school for 3rd and 4th grade students. If your child loves music or singing and would like to have more of it in their week, they should come to the first few rehearsals to see what it is like. Permission slips will be available at rehearsals and will be due by November 22nd.

Chorus Rehearsal Schedule:

3rd Grade - Tuesdays from 7:40-8:10 starts 11/1

4th Grade - Thursdays from 7:40-8:10 starts 10/27

Recorder Order: 4th Grade families were given a Recorder Order form to be completed by Monday, 10/17. If you forgot or lost the form, you can complete it digitally at this link. Thanks!

Ask Me! This week, Kindergarten students received their first "Ask Me!" sheet. Students will bring these home throughout the year. On the sheet is a song or rhyme students have been practicing in music class. Ask your student to perform and/or teach it to you! Singing and speaking rhymes at home are both great ways to strengthen your child's music skills.

If you have any additional questions, please email Lizzy Palumbo at epalumbo@huusd.org.

...from the Library

Yes, we take donations for books in good repair, preferably hard cover! (We especially love graphic novels, Minecraft, Ninjago, Pokemon, fairies, princesses and superheroes).

Yes, there are going to be TWO Book Fairs this year... the first week of November 14th!

Yes, the weekly emails you receive are gentle requests to help your children develop responsible library habits!

Nurses' Notes

Clothing Needed:

The nurses's office is seeking gently used long pants with an elastic waistband. Sizes needed are 4T-10. Clothing is used for children who do not have extra clothing in their backpacks and may need to change during the school day. We appreciate your donation!

Flu: The Centers for Disease Control recommends that anyone age 6months and older get a flu vaccine to prevent the flu. Now is a great time to schedule a flu vaccine for your child with his or her primary care provider. If you do not have a primary doctor, please reach out to the school Nurse. The Vermont Department of Health is offering vaccines at the district office in Barre for those who do not have a primary care provider. Please call 479-0987 to schedule a time for your child. Brookside Community Skating Party - Hope to see you there!

When: Saturday 11/5 from 10am-12

Cost: FREE admission and skate rental

Please join your friends at this fun event put together by the PTO.

Volunteers Needed for Nature Education Program : Brookside Primary School's Four Winds Nature Education program is still seeking volunteers to help teach kids about our natural world. This year the theme is “Earth” and we will be teaching 6 different lessons on topics including sunlight & shadows, erosion, rocks & minerals, air, wind & clouds, and the water cycle. We have most of the classrooms covered by a volunteer, but ideally we would have two volunteers per class. You can team up with another parent to take on the lesson together. The sunlight and shadows lessons are starting this month, but it is not too late to join Four Winds. You do not need to be a parent of a BPS student. We have had excellent volunteers that were grandparents, aunts/uncles, neighbors, and interested community members that just want to help introduce the splendor of our natural world to young minds. We offer all the training and supplies to get you started. Please email me at fourwindsbps@gmail.com to let us know if you are interested in volunteering this year or if you have any questions about the program.

3rd-6th grade will practice twice during the week and play games on Saturdays. CBMS Ski & Ride Program information - Ski and Ride is looking for a new coordinator to come in and learn the ropes this year and take over for the 2024 ski season. This takes 6-8 Wednesdays, as well as 2-6 hours of planning between Sunday and Tuesday, so about 12-14 hours a week while the program is in session. Prior to that the planning stage from October 1 onwards is probably 1-2 hours of emailing/organizing and a good 24 hours (by Jan 1) to match volunteers and children for the first day. A handful of CBMS staff members do join in the program on the hill and assist in loading the buses; otherwise this program is fully run and operated by volunteers and parents. If you are interested in in receiving more information on being a coordinator, please contact Denise Rundle at ski_ride@wwsu.org.
