Brookside Blast 10/25/2024

Students in first and third grade took an epic field trip on Friday to see The Wild Robot, a new movie based on the beloved series that many classes read last year and/or are reading this year. They had the theater to themselves!

This upcoming final week of October brings many things, often including snow (!), and excitement about the change in seasons as well as Halloween celebrations many families take part in.

In keeping with Brookside tradition, for a variety of reasons (creating an inclusive environment, maintaining routine and stability for students, ensuring students aren’t scared by one another’s costume choices) Halloween costumes are NOT part of the Brookside Primary School experience. Thank you for your understanding and support.

On the morning of Friday 11/1, students in all grades will participate in a different celebration and tradition - the Color Parade! This is one of our favorite PBIS (Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions) school-wide celebrations, and has been earned by our entire school for following the school codes of:

Be safe

Be respectful

Be responsible

We look forward to continuing to share inclusive rituals with the BPS community and celebrating our accomplishments together!

In partnership,

Sarah & Chris

Staff Spotlight...

Hello Families! My name is Heidi Chapman-Renaud. I am happy to be joining the Brookside community this year, working as an instructional assistant. I have worked in education for over 20 years, but spent the last three years working at Gardener's Supply in Williston. I spent many years as a classroom teacher, in grades K-2, but also worked as a daily and long term substitute in all the primary grades, pre-K-4. I love getting to know all the new students here at BPS, as well as the teaching community. Please feel free to stop me and introduce yourself. I am new in Waterbury and excited to make more connections.

School Counseling Corner

Hello Families,

October is National Bullying Awareness Month and a time where we pause to spread awareness about this important topic as well as strengthen and foster safe and supportive relationships and environments within our BPS community.

This month, Ms. M and Ms. B have started to go into the classrooms to teach the 2nd Step Bullying Prevention Curriculum. This lesson really identifies what Bullying is (and isn’t!) and focuses on the 3 R’s-which are Recognizing (how do we know what is bullying and what is not?), Reporting (how do I go about talking to a trusted adult about this?) and Refusing (what words and tone of voice should I use to tell someone to stop?).

The students have done an amazing job of engaging with the lesson and asking very thoughtful questions. The below chart may be a helpful resource to discuss with your child(ren) if they experience unsettling situations at school. Please check out the BPS Comfortship website for more resources and information!

Please reach out anytime if you have questions or wish to discuss anything further.

Be Well,
